There are two types of UV that reach us on earth: UVA & UVB. Both kind of UV can damage the skin but in slightly different way.

How UV rays damage the skin?
The upper layer of the skin it calls the epidermis (thượng bì). Visible light from the sun is reflected off from the epidermis, but UVA penetrate into it. UVB reacts with DNA of cells and cause DNA damage. Our skin cells are able to repair DNA damage, but with time. If enough damage DNA accumulates, skin cancer can form.
In the epidermis, there are cells called melanocytes. when skin cells are damage by UV light, melanocytes release a dark pigment call melanin. Melanin is able to absord UV sight. and so, the body use melanin as UV shield. (lá chắn)
But melanin isn’t able to completely stop skin damage from UVB. A skin tan is actually a sign that skin damage already occurred. And the body is preparing itself for further UV exposure. In a sunburn, UVB causes so much damage that skin cells die and upper layer of skin peels off. The dead of cells also trigger inflammation, making skin red, hot and painful to touch.
UVA can also increase the risk of skin cancer but mostly involved in accelerating skin aging. UVA is able to infiltrate down to the deep layer of skin, called the dermis (trung bì). The dermis has a scaffolding of molecules such as collagen that makes your skin elastic.
When you pull in your skin, it is this scaffolding that help your skin spring back. UAV damage this collagen scaffolding. This makes your skin more prone to wrinkling and sagging (sệ, lún sụt).
We know that sunlight in moderate amounts of helpful for making vitamin D. Also UV light prescribed by doctors can be helpful to immune based skin condition like psoriasis. (bệnh vảy nến)
